For Mrs. Altier to help her students to do well in her class she can use many different learning theories to better them, such as Thorndike’s law of effect. The law is essentially saying that rewarded behavior is more likely to occur again than unrewarded behavior which essentially means that a behavior will occur if it is followed by a satisfying effect and is less likely to occur if followed by an unsatisfying event. Mrs. Altier could apply Thorndike 's law in order for students to achieve higher grades, consistent studying habits, and other exemplary behaviors. For example Mrs. Altier can give food or extra-credit for students who do their homework every night for a week, or acheiving a set standard on tests. This is also associated with the process of reinforcement, which is any event that strengthens the likelihood of a behavior. This would allow for Mrs. Altier to use a procedure known as shaping, which is a process in which reinforcers guide behavior toward closer and closer approximations of the desired behavior. These reinforcers consist of two different types which are primary reinforcers and conditioned reinforcers. A primary reinforcer is an innately reinforcing stimulus, such as one that satisfies a biological need. For example, Mrs. Altier could give food to her class as a primary reinforcer. A conditioned reinforcer, is a stimulus that gains its reinforcing power through its association with a primary reinforcer. Mrs. Altier could use extra-credit points as a…
