Reality therapy highlights and focuses on current problems and future goals; and does not examine maladaptive behavior for its origins. Thus, not focusing on the past where some people may have difficulty and not want to talk about their inner most feelings or history. Those who choose this theory must be active in the counseling process. In reality therapy, the therapy itself is often considered to be a mentoring process, where the counselor assumes the role of the teacher and the counselee becomes the student. The counselor assists the client in evaluating their wants, specific actions and perceptions. It is also important in this particular therapy for the counselor to connect with and develop a relationship with the client. In this particular therapy the counselor would be free to comfort the afflicted as well as being free to challenge the comfortable while striving to avoid quarreling, condemning, counter-transference and bullying the client.
