Well, when Theodore Roosevelt was colonel in the Spanish-American War, he led the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry also known as the Rough Riders, who were a group of cowboys, miners, law enforcement officials, and Native Americans. In fact, Theodore Roosevelt left is position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy just so he could lead this group of men. They were then sent to join the battle of San Juan Hill, which was being bombarded heavily. When the Rough Riders joined the fight, the tides had turned and the forces were able to hold the position. This battle is known as the climax of the Spanish-American War which allowed the United States to siege the city of Santiago (americaslibrary.gov). It is also the most famous battle mainly because Theodore Roosevelt wrote about it soon after. Soon after this battle, The Spanish left Cuba and the United States were victorious. On October 14th, he was scheduled to deliver a speech on his new progressive party, also known as the Bull Moose party, which got its name from Theodore Roosevelt once said that he feels as fit as a bull moose. On his way to the speech, Theodore Roosevelt was shot in his chest, exactly where he kept his papers for his speech he had planned. Instead of heading for the hospital, Theodore Roosevelt insisted on delivering his speech, which then lasted for 90 minutes. The speech, now known as the “It Takes More Than That To Kill a Bull Moose” speech, is one of the best speeches that shows the strength of a leader. He begins his speech by letting his audience know what had just happened. He begins, “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose. But fortunately I had my manuscript, so you see I was going to make a long speech, and there is a bullet - there is where the bullet went through - and it probably saved me from it going into my heart.
