Jacques-Louis David’s , Oath of the Horatii was painted in 1784 during the Neoclassical era. The Neoclassical era, was a revival of classicism in French art. David uses soft brushstrokes, color contrast, and stylization to represent the pro-revolutionary attitude of the French during the Neoclassical era. The attention to detail in the muscles of the men shows David’s lean towards realism. The tunics that the men wear show that they are Roman warriors, and the drapery around the females are stylized. David also uses brushstrokes that are so clear that the painting looks more like a photograph than a painting.

The two weeping women in the back are shown, in devastated or defeated posture. One woman is facing downward as if she is weeping, and the other is facing towards her as if she cannot hold herself up because of grief or exasperation. This was during the Romanticism era. Though this painting hold similarities in relation to David’s such as the theme of revolution and war, Goya goes about presenting his message in a very different way- one that is true to Romanticism.
One of the main characteristics of Goya’s painting that makes it romantic art, is its strong appeal to emotion. The painting portrays a clear narrative as opposed to David’s that held hidden themes and messages. By looking at Goya’s painting, the subject matter is apparent and there are no heavily veiled symbols.
Goya’s painting is one of tribute. He uses very loose brushstrokes and the lines become blurry and less precise straying far from David’s Neoclassical style painting.
