What if an individual has their rights taken from them due to how they are born? In John Steinbeck 's novel Of Mice and Men George and Lennie find work on a farm in order to earn a small fortune for their own ranch. Lennie 's unyielding strength and furious temper land him in a world of trouble when he accidentally murders a lady. Not just any lady though, the boss’s daughter in law. Upon arriving on the farm George and Lennie come across individuals who have their rights limited because of how they are born. Steinbeck 's character Crooks is a colored man merely surviving in the racist world of the 1930s. This was a time when many individuals with darker skin were limited in what they are able to do. Crooks, being a colored man, is not allowed to take part in activities the other men do for instance. He is forbidden to sleep in the bunkhouse where all the other working men sleep. Instead Crooks is bound to sleep in a room at the back of the barn. Crooks 's only visitors are his boss and occasionally Slim. Any other man is considered crazy to dare step a foot in a colored man 's room. Also Crooks does not socialize often. Due to the color of his skin the only socializing Crooks participates in is taking orders. The other men do not think twice to invite him to play horseshoes with them. Based on this Crook 's ' ability to socialize in a friendly manner are restricted. In this time it is not acceptable for someone of color to talk to a white man, unless it is to discuss …show more content…
Rights can be taken due to skin pigment or gender. Even the mentally and physically disabled have their rights taken away. Most cannot have say in discussions or will not be given the opportunity to work to the best of their ability. Individuals have their rights taken away for endless reasons, most of which they cannot change. These individuals are often not given the chance to show what strength they actually
