As the prominence of technology increases, so does the censorship of it. The United States of America has many methods of concealing what is published online and to the rest of the world. As stated in the article “How Media Censorship Affects the News You See” by Glenn Halbrooks, the government controls many areas of media such as personal privacy, publishing graphic details and images, concealing security information, and hiding political bias. Although these restrictions may not immediately impact America negatively, this beginning step towards the censorship allows the Americans to become comfortable with the idea of it and therefore lay the foundation for the government to furthermore abuse the restrictions of what is displayed. In Legend by Marie Lu, the Republic also starts out small by making tiny adjustments and telling tiny lies to their citizens, but then later moves onto releasing propaganda on a larger scale and taking full control of what is publicly displayed. Both sides share a striking amount of similarities such as the fact that both governments are able to completely control what is produced by the news and who shares what. Although Legend depicts a more after the fact look on what could happen if government takes complete control over the media, the United States still is beginning to show tendencies that it can turn out the same way the Republic can. This is dangerous because if the issue is not stopped now or at the least talked about, it will only begin to grow larger and larger until government has complete control. A potential solution to this problem would be taking away this control that the government has over media. For instance, the people of America could learn and adapt to the propaganda that is released, and learn not to believe every fact they see.
