Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807 to Stephan Longfellow and Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow. He was named after his uncle fought in the battle of Tripoli Harbor and died 3 years prior to Henry's birth. He was the second son among 8 children. His parents named the children so it would rhyme, "Stephen and Henry, Elizabeth and Anne, Alex and Mary, Ellen and Sam (Maine Historical Society).” He grew up in Portland, Maine which then, was still part of Massachusetts.
