In the poems ¨Huswifery¨ by Edward Taylor, and ¨To A Mouse¨ by Robert Burns, the universal theme is man vs. nature, while showing that they also share the themes to commit themselves and truly be devoted to what they want and, never take what they have for granted as well as persevere and push through the hard times. They show these using tragic and accepting tones, as well as figurative language. In “Huswifery” the theme of the poem is to commit yourself and to truly be devoted to something you desperately want. In “Huswifery” the speaker is devoting his whole entire life to God, because he has such desperation to to follow the Lord and become a part of his kingdom. Edward Taylor, in “Huswifery” wrote, “ Make me, O Lord, Thy spinning-wheel complete.” The speaker is asking and pleading for God to make him the Lords spinning wheel, to make use of him in God’s plan. He portrays how desperate he is to be apart of the great things the Lord has planned. Soon after that line in the poem the speaker starts stating how he wants all of him to be apart of the spinning wheel including his emotions, his soul, everything. He is willing to sacrifice everything to be apart of God’s kingdom. He is a true partisan of the Lord’s plan. When you read the background on Edward Taylor, you will read how he had the opportunity to be a professor and he sacrificed and …show more content…

These poems show the true meaning of perseverance and devotion. “Huswifery” shows how the speaker strives through giving up some of his most greatest accomplishments but he perseveres through it to reach something he is truly devoted to. In “To A Mouse” he perseveres through how the hard times affect both him and the mouse to also get something they were committed to. In The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, the author retells a story of a group of immigrants who attempted to cross the border from Mexico into America. Throughout the novel, Urrea uses figurative language and syntax to prove the meaning that in order to grow as a community, there needs to be unity; making quick judgements about others can prevent people from uniting together. Towards the beginning of the novel, Urrea describes how the bodies of those who died crossing the border are treated in inspections for reports. He particularly describes how the deceased are referred to and states, “Some reports wittily call these men Juan Does. Jane Doe becomes Juana Doe” (Urrea 36).…

In this essay I will compare and contrast the two poems by presenting different examples. Titles can say a lot about a poem. Although titles can sometimes be misleading, they often establish the setting or portray the tone of the poem. The titles given to these poems are very similar because they establish the setting, but also serve different purposes. “Last…

Poems are pieces of writing that convey meanings through nature and rhetorical devices. Phillis Wheatley uses nature as well as light and dark imagery, reason and love to show the meaning in her poem “Thoughts on the Works of Providence”. Her audience is forced to think about the meanings of the poem through the imagery she uses. Wheatley efficiently uses rhetorical strategies to get her message across about God’s providence, which is how God provides for us. The reader must adequately absorb the imagery in order to understand what the poem is about.…

The poem begins with a direct speech from the speaker establishing one specific day in time where one has an epiphany of what one’s purpose in life is. In the three next lines, a symbol is introduced as the “voices”. The “voices” represent other people, mainly those who are part of one’s life but are not beneficial to one’s personal growth. These three lines reveal the true intentions of those voices as they keep saying the wrong things and shifting one’s mind in a different direction. The next four lines utilizes metaphors to emphasize one’s perseverance.…

I began this revision by making a few small changes. First changing “go on” to “went” so that the past tense I chose to use would remain consistent. This made a bigger difference than I though it would; it makes it seem like there was more of a separation between the speaker and what was going on around her than I though tit would. I then changed “cold” to “small,” which flows much more smoothly into “shy.” “Cold” has a harder, more unforgiving connotation, when I wanted it to come across that the dog looked vulnerable.…

For example, before she entered the selection she was poor and intolerant. ”Our money was stretched as tight a high wire, and our income was highly dependent on the season”(Cass 3).This quote is indicating that they are poor because when people say money is tight it usually means that don't have much of it,and need to spend it wisely. She also used a figurative language technique which is used to make a point. She compared the money to a high wire, and a high wire is very tight so a high rope walker doesn't lose their balance.…

In "The Pie," a short story by Gary Soto, the narrator uses figurative language to lead the reader down a spiraling passage into spiritual guilt, stealing, and gluttony. For example, when the narrator states he knew enough about hell to stop him from stealing and that somedays he recognized the shadows of angels flopping on the backyard grass, and other days, the narrator, "heard far away messages in the plumbing that howled underneath the house," (Soto). The quote "far away messages in the plumbing that howled underneath the house," is an example of personification, giving the reader the idea that Soto is describing the plumbing, an inanimate, object, using living traits; referencing that the plumbing is screaming out to the narrator as the…

Poets use intimate stories to express broad concepts that relate to us and the world around us. The first of two poems I’m going to show convey this message is John Foulchers poem ‘HARRY WOOD’ he shows survival, sacrifice and regret survival through an anecdote of an old retired miner who started his life in poverty and struggled to give his family a better future. The second poem ‘Joanna’s bedroom’ by Steven Herrick shows concepts of unconditional love, ups and downs and emotions through a couple’s destructive battle. Survival is human instinct. It flows through us, can force us to do terrible things and pushes some of us to do the impossible.…
