In the early twentieth and late nineteenth centuries, the United States expanded rapidly into the south and central United States as well as the Pacific Ocean. This was not the first time the United States had believed that it was superior enough to warrant interfering in the affairs of other nations. The United States had used Manifest Destiny, or the belief that the US was destined through its superiority to take over most of the continental US, which at the time was owned by Indian nations and Mexico. This new expansion was a continuation of the belief that a superior country should intervene in the affairs of lesser countries controlled by lesser races which could be compared to the original imperialism of the 18th century United States and Manifest Destiny.
Much like the beliefs that Native Americans were savages or lesser people who could easily be conquered, the new countries and races that the America took over were subject to the same discrimination. The US saw their people as lesser, subservient to the white race. Josiah Strong says in his address Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis: “It seems to me that God, with infinite wisdom and skill, is training the Anglo-Saxon race for an hour sure to come in the world’s future…The Unoccupied arable lands of the earth are limited, and will soon be taken…” This belief that Strong was preaching to the American people was that white Americans alone were the god-entitled race suited to govern the Earth.…
