Another reason Curley is regarded as powerful is because of his boots as they are different from everyone else’s on the ranch, so like Prospero’s cloak and staff Curley’s boots are made him to be seen as a powerful man. Curley’s power is also a good example of social injustice and corruption as Candy says at the start of the novel “Curley won’t ever get canned cause his old man’s the boss” and this relates to Prospero as he is the “ruler” of the island and he has power and economic status. In addition, Curley’s power is that he lives in a house unlike all the other men on the ranch who live in the bunk house and are lonely men, unlike Curley who has a wife. However because of this he is looked down on by the men of the ranch as Curley wears a glove filled with Vaseline one hand that he keeps “soft for his wife” and this suggests that he makes obscene allusions towards his wife. Ariel is also almost like Prospero’s spy as he reports back everything that is said from the characters as Ariel has the ability to be unseen by the characters so they do not realise they are being listened to or having tricks played on them.
