Many people have power or are overpowered by others. This applies both in real life and the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Many of the characters in John Steinbeck's book excel or are limited in power. But all characters have certain aspects about their personality and physique that gives them power or shows why people have power over them. Many details and aspects make characters the way they are and their abilities and limits display their dominance. George might not be that big in size, but his voice, character, and mental ability show that he has power. Though George might not have power over much, mostly because everyone who has power over him is an authoritative figure. George has power over mostly Lennie and Candy. Several …show more content…
Curley’s wife is very lonely, she married Curley and by evidence living with him might be a hostile environment. She talked about other opportunities she had in life, but someone always declined her right to work to that opportunity. Curley’s wife is also ignored and not welcomed among the ranch hands. They call her jailbait and whenever she tries to talk to one of them they send her off. Her loneliness is derived from people having power over her since she was a woman in that time. Curley’s wife did not have any power over anybody she did have her threats and connection to the boss, but with her being a woman in that time period all of the other characters had power over her.
Curley has power over the ranch hands because he is the boss's son. His attitude and temper also make up for the fact the he is small, and in his mind he is stronger than what he appears to be. Curley despises big men like Lennie causing them to fight, because of Curley’s pugnacity he fought Lennie thinking he would win, but ending with his hand being broken. In his mind Curley is powerful, and because of him being the son of the owner of the ranch he has power over the workers. Curley has power only over those that work for his
