The Character Of Curley In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Improved Essays
Curley is a major example of a power seeking character. As a small, anger-filled man, he seeks power over the ranch hands, large men such as Lennie, and even his own wife. Within the first two chapters, Curley becomes an obvious antagonist. While in the bunkhouse, Candy, the old swamper, tells George and Lennie about the trouble revolving around Curley. Candy says, "He just don't give a damn. Won't ever get canned 'cause his old man's the boss" (Steinbeck 27). This reveals how Curley abuses his position as the boss's son. Even though he should not feel the need to make himself more powerful, the Human Nature inside of him pushes him to be more powerful than the people around him. He also, despite his small size, likes to make himself more powerful

Another reason Curley is regarded as powerful is because of his boots as they are different from everyone else’s on the ranch, so like Prospero’s cloak and staff Curley’s boots are made him to be seen as a powerful man. Curley’s power is also a good example of social injustice and corruption as Candy says at the start of the novel “Curley won’t ever get canned cause his old man’s the boss” and this relates to Prospero as he is the “ruler” of the island and he has power and economic status. In addition, Curley’s power is that he lives in a house unlike all the other men on the ranch who live in the bunk house and are lonely men, unlike Curley who has a wife. However because of this he is looked down on by the men of the ranch as Curley wears a glove filled with Vaseline one hand that he keeps “soft for his wife” and this suggests that he makes obscene allusions towards his wife. Adding to this Curley loves to have power and control over his wife, as Prospero does with Miranda, and Curley treats his wife like he possesses her as he always running around looking for his wife, as he often bursts into the bunk house demanding to know where his wife is “you seen a girl around here?”…

The fact that Lennie is more physically powerful than him makes Curley feel insecure of his power and makes him develop a resentment for Lennie because “[Curley] hates big guys… Kind of like he’s mad at ‘em because he ain’t a big guy” (Steinbeck 26). Powerful residents of the ranch, like Curley, take advantage of those that are not regarded by the society, such as Crooks, Lennie, and Candy, making them feel more defeated and deprived of self confidence. As the mental defeat of let down characters like Crooks and Candy starts to become more noticeable, many powerful people at the ranch start to feel more dominant and start believing in their superiority. This gives them a sense of control and therefore allows them to misuse their power and express more hateful and prejudiced thoughts towards the less able characters, but when their pride is cracked, it takes a heavy toll on them and causes them to feel bitter towards the one that causes the insecurity of their pride. This is related to Curley’s arrogant and jealous behavior because his increased…
