Laura Kentley (2010) found Paige and looked at the effects of her being restrained in the same ways Hattie was restrained. Paige was also sat on but she was also put into a seclusion room and left there for three or more hours per day with no food, water or bathroom breaks. Paige’s mother would find bruises over Paige almost every day. Whenever her mother tried to talk to the teacher, principle, or the school board she never got any response. She was never told why Paige was receiving this punishment. One day Paige had been thrown on her head and the parents were unaware and were not looking for signs of possible brain injury. The next day at Paige’s doctor’s appointment the doctor noticed the bruises and the bump on her head and called Child Protective Services. Paige’s mother told the police about the abuse her daughter was receiving and how the school took no responsibility nor acknowledge the fact the abuse was happening. Paige was soon pulled from the school and now is 15 years old (2010). Paige no longer has the self-esteem she did and no longer has any interest in school. Both Hattie and Paige share a similar story. They were both restrained and the effects of improper restraint resulted in the death of one child, and the loss of interest in school in the other. Personally, I don’t think I would ever be comfortable with restraint. I do however; think that seclusion could have some benefits as long as the environment the seclusion is performed in is safe. As of right now, I do not have the proper training in order to perform restraint or seclusion. After reading these articles I have found knowledge about the laws that can be very helpful in my teaching career. Now that I know about the child’s point of view on what it feels like to be restrained and secluded, I will have to try to find ways that will be an intervention technique that will have a positive effect on their
