The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a story about Walter, an average guy who has constantly gets sucked into fantasies throughout his day, where he goes from being a captain of a boat, saying things such as “‘Full strength on No. 3 Turret!’ the crew, bending to their various tasks in the huge, hurtling eight-engined Navy hydroplane”, to being a brave soldier in war “‘I’ll fly alone.’ ‘But you can’t sir… It takes two men to handle that bomber and the archies are pounding the hell out of the air’”, to being a criminal in court “‘I could have killed Gregory Fitzhurst at three hundred feet with my left hand’ Pandemonium broke loose in the courtroom”. A story like this has never been written before this, and never quite so successfully. Originality is extremely important to a good book.
