Therefore, more research done by social scientists was focused on the “supposed pathological aspects of the interracial relationship.”(Grapes 10) Social scientists gave three reasons why anyone would enter into an interracial relationship: the couple was neurotic, one of the partner was marrying to get a higher status, or that one or both partners were rebelling against their parents or society due to a deep-seated bitterness. However, recent research has proven these theories wrong. One of the researches done by Clayton Majete, an instructor in the department of Sociology and Anthropology at Baruch College. Most of the participants in this research were well educated. 65 percent had their bachelor’s degree and 25 percent had professional degrees and worked as doctors, nurses, lawyers and social workers. Also, these couples came from middle-class families and met their significant others in college, work, or social gatherings. (Grapes 10). These statistics disprove the reasons social scientists gave about interracial relationships. Interracial relationships would have been more of a personal trouble, if those reasons were real. However, since that is not the case and interracial relationships are still been frowned upon, it becomes a public issue. Family problems, communication, language barriers, cultural differences, religious differences and moral differences, are things that some interracial couples face.
According to Barbara, a white female participant in a social research about interracial couples, her parents’ response depicts the response of some interracial couples’ family members: “My father was very angry with me when I first started my relationship with George. He threatened to end the relationship…” (Killian 84) Sometimes, reactions from family members can be drastic and hostile. For example, they might refuse to attend the wedding ceremony or cut off ties with the family member. (Killian 85) Sometimes, religious, moral, and cultural differences can cause thrive even between the couples.
Nonetheless, interracial relationships have a lot of potential in our society. It is true that interracial relationships cannot end racism, but it can be a start. The more the society becomes integrated and culturally aware, the more stereotypes can be overcome. "The mingling and the mixing of race is a sign that we are evolving toward a higher, more integrated state as a culture.
