Attraction is a popular field of study in psychology. In a mixed society that we exemplify today in America, it is common to see people of multiple races and ethnicities but what influences race and ethnicity have on everyday life such as it pertains to attraction is something that we are still discovering. Looking back in history, interracial communication and living is a new progression. Although the general population may not always consider how races and ethnicities play a role in our procreation and attraction to sexual partners, empirical evidence supports that race effects attraction (McClintock,& Murry, (2010). One of the facets was similarity. For example, race has an implicit effect on attraction through similarities in attitudes. Understanding how attitude similarities between races effects successful collaboration helps in understanding attraction to race through similarities (Johnson & Johnson, 1972). When White or Black subjects were tested to view their similarities in attitudes then given a goal to see if similarities in attitudes would positively effect communication those who were similar in their attitudes had more success completing their goal than those who were not. Relatedly, research had supported that similarities between races and preferences for romantic partners between whites and blacks have effects on attraction (Mendelsohn, Shaw Taylor, Fiore, & Cheshire, 2014). This research was conducted hypothesizing that similarities in race would show in their attraction preferences to subjects of opposite or same races. More specifically, they expected to find higher racial preferences of the opposite race then the past but at the same time expected to see majority racial preferences for romantic partners of the same race. Loosely related to the question of how race effects attraction, their research showed how race has an effect on how people naturally classify and categorize race in different social situations such as mate selection and situations than ensue self-protecting. For example in the case of protecting subjects categorized black males as being more dangerous than white males. Loosely related to the question of how race effects attraction, research has been conducted on how race has an effect on residential perceptions and preferences when choosing a place of living, certain physical locations were seen as more attractive due to the race presiding in the residence. Also, race most clearly affected the perception of a residence of white people rather than blacks and Latinos when given a map for choosing a hypothetical residence (Bader & Krysan, 2015). Lastly, differences in sex have been observed to affect attraction to race among other aspects such as appearances and social status (Li et al., 2013).
