Mark Smith’s ‘The road to winter’ (released in 2016) Is a story of a boy (Finn) in a post-apocalyptic world, where a disease has taken over. ‘The road to winter’ is a story about survival, love, and fear.
With good preparation comes power. Ramage made quick decisions when the disease hit and that’s why throughout the book he is in a position of power. When a disease hits, especially as lethal as the one in the book, the littlest amount goes very far. In the second chapter Rose is amazed by what finn has access to. In a post-apocalyptic setting, the smallest amount can go a long way. Finn’s father did a lot to prepare, Because of the little amount he had saved, Finn was able to survive as long as he did. In the second chapter after Finn and rose escape from the Wilders, the two enter Finn’s home, and rose is astounded by what Finn has access to. (Quote) Rose was someone who only just got by, and was clearly amazed by what Finn had. “Wow, your dad’s really smart”. This demonstrates how just a little, can go a long way in a world being torn apart. Rose and her sister Kas had nothing, and manages to survive and the little they had, even less than what Finn and his father had in their position. The only reason they survived is because of the Wilders, even though the two were used for slavery. The Wilders did feed the two, but it is clear that it wouldn’t have been much, for them to want to run and take their chances on their own. “I escaped them and I’m never coming back.” In the start of the novel, we hear about the supermarket being taken over and all of the food being stolen. When a terrible disease like this one hit, it caused the normal people of the town to do crazy things when they had so little, in order to survive. Finn trades food with Ray because he prepared. He had vegetables he could trade for Finn’s resources and a gun. When Finn speaks of Ray, he tells of his first encounter with him. Finn looks up from the ground to see a double barrel shotgun pointed in his face. Later they forge a friendship, but Ray could have easily protected his land from what could have been an intruder. Ray had prepared and can now protect his land. For an adult, a gun isn’t hard to get. A little preparation and one can defend themselves easily. Ray has a large amount of access to food, because of his preparation with is vegetables growing in his property. He also can trade food because of the bond he had forged with the young Finn.
