The Rise of the Ottoman Empire The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and longest lasting Empires in history. Its history goes back to Seljuk Turks which was in the 11th century. Seljuk Turks are origins of the Ottoman Empire. Everything started with the Battle of Manzikert. The Battle of Manzikert was decisive a battle between Seljuk Turks and Byzantine Empire on 1071 in Malazgirt, Mus. (a city on the east side of the Turkey) Seljuk Turks defeated Byzantine Empire which allowed the authority in Anatolia to change. Turkification in Anatolia has started after the Battle of Manzikert. Turkification is the assimilation of cultures and identities into various historical Turkic states. Many Turks started to come into central Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert which led Byzantine Empire into an economic crisis. There were many Muslim states in Anatolia competing with each other for territory. Ertugrul Gazi, Osman I`s father, led his group to move towards to the west Anatolia. Osman I was the founder of the Ottoman Empire. In his lifetime, Ottoman was not an empire, it was just a state. But Ottoman Empire prevailed the World after he died. When it was only a small state in Anatolia, the Ottoman Empire was competing with other small Muslim states to territories. Anatolia was broken into pieces and it was not controlled by one empire or state. There was one strong Empire that could be a problem for those small states and it was the Byzantine Empire. Byzantine Empire was not in a good situation when they had many fights for the throne. They did not have an actual king or a leader and they were fighting with other countries in Europe. Countries in Europe were broken into pieces as well so there was no actual authority. Therefore, there was no danger for small states to expand their
