Rules are created in society for one of two purposes; to protect the rights of man, and to protect the rights of men. The rights of men are the rights of the society, the rights of the group, the rights of the collective men; these laws and rules create order to protect mankind from the dangers of the world, ourselves, and others. The rights of man are the rights of the individuals, the inalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness among others. The society portrayed in Ayn Rand’s Anthem only creates rules for the purpose of protecting the rights of men, the safety of the group, or in other words to maintain order in the society. To prefer a thing is to determine a path for one’s self, preference is what drives decisions and decisions are what drive life. Equality shows preference for the Science of Things and so he wishes to go to the House of Scholars so that he can continue to study science, this is his hope, his possibility of happiness that is taken away from him by the Council of Vocations and his assignment as a street sweeper.
