In order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, people need to maintain a good mental health in the meantime. Vegetarian diets are also linked with people’s mental health closely with the definition as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” Diets play an important role when it comes to human mood, which create a positive relationship. In modern society, people from every age group suffer from depression. A report in the British Journal of Psychiatry clarifies that “individuals eating whole foods reported fewer symptoms of depression compared to those who ate mostly …show more content…
Although people state that there are lower EPA and DHA of omega-3 fatty acids intake in vegetarian diets, vegetarians are still reported to have less negative mood and depression. With the proof of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS), these two tests have illuminated that “the vegetarian diets are not likely associated with poor mood states or depression as compared to omnivorous diets, despite negligible sources of the long-chain omega-3 fats.” This shows the positive relationship between vegetarian diets and mental health, people who consume more plant-based food have less unenthusiastic emotions. Along with the influence in mood, many people become vegetarians because of religious reasons. With the increasing tendency of vegetarianism in the society, the identity of vegetarians has been sharped and approved by the public. Identity is an approval that is “not created only by oneself, but is also informed by the perceptions and actions of others.” As the public accepts vegetarians, their identities are sharped strongly, which will also influence them to have a higher self-esteem and be more socially confident. Moreover, vegetarians can make more friends within the vegetarian circle since people have the same believe and habit of consuming a healthy living by vegetarian diets. Another social benefit of eating vegetarian diets is to build a strong responsibility to the environmental conservation. There is an increase factor of people considering vegetarian lifestyle as they have noticed the importance of protecting the ecosystem. Plant-based diets are seen as “environmental friendly” products, which are not produced by killing the animals and disturbed the wildlife food chains. In the phenomenon of attaching environmentalism, people show more interest towards vegetarian lifestyle with its characteristic “environmental friendly” to the world.
