Today, the President of the United States of America is one of the most publicized personalities in the country and around the world. The United States President is often called “the leader of the free world” because of the influence the United States and the presidency has throughout the world. Much of the president’s power stems from his position as the head of the executive branch and commander-in-chief of the United States military, the highest military rank of the armed forces, which grants him authority over all military action. Therefore, not only is the President the leader of the world’s most powerful army, but he is also the leader of the largest economy in the world making him a very powerful man. However, the Framer’s of the constitution of the United States of America were wary of the potential threat of tyranny that could arise from such a powerful position, so they created a system of checks and balances that limited the power of the president. Congress holds a longer list of powers than the president, because although the Framer’s wanted a strong presidency, they also wanted to ‘check’ the president’s power. The president is still a very powerful man, but he does not have the freedom to do as he pleases and he must answer to Congress if he wants to take certain actions, such as declaring war and appointing judges, ambassadors and other officials into positions of power, who must then be approved by the Senate.
