There is no man capable of overcoming nature
In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story The Birthmark Alymer attempts to do just that.
All those who attempt to overcome nature will receive severe punishment
In The Birthmark, it is proven that nature has undeniable dominance over man
Georgiana’s immediate sadness from waking up after what seemed like a success is proof that no man is above nature.
Her immediate expression displays worry when seemingly all should be well. She has no joy from what appears to be an incredible success.
The closest thing to happiness she shows is a small smile
“her eyes sought out Alymer’s with a trouble and anxiety that he by no means could account for.”
Trouble and anxiety is not the reaction …show more content…
Alymer still does not realize error and continues to celebrate what he believes is a victory. Georgiana is forced to explain to him that he failed.
She is distraught and having to explain that she is dying because her husband wanted to be more powerful than nature
“... you have rejected the earth could offer, Alymer, dearest Alymer, I am dying!”
The selfishness of Alymer and his wanting to be more than nature led to her death
2. Alymer eventually recognizes his error, however he was too late
“... the parting breath of a now perfect woman passed into the atmosphere.“ This proves that those who attempt to rise above nature are destined for
Failure

When he sees Georgiana for the first time he says something that Alymer should’ve taken to heart.
“If she were my wife, I’d never part with that birthmark.”
This seems to imply that Aminidab knows this will not end well for anyone
B. Aminidab surprisingly seems to be the voice of reason. He almost seems to know something that the others don’t about the outcome of this.
Alymer thinks relatively lowly of Aminidab, which seems to be symbolism for how he believes that he is dominant over nature.
“ laugh, thing of senses! You have earned the right to laugh!”
Alymer seems to believe that Aminidab needs to earn the right to laugh, demonstrating how little he thinks of his assistant
2. Aminidab almost seems to achieve a kind of revenge with Alymer, after Georgiana passes the text reads
“Then a hoarse, chuckling laugh was heard…”
This is implied to be Aminidab as Georgiana has passed, and this is after Alymer said that he had “ earned the right to laugh “ this symbolises nature literally getting the last laugh
