Rap, is “a style of popular music, developed by disc jockeys and urban blacks in the late 1970s, in which an insistent, recurring beat pattern provides the background and counterpoint for rapid, slangy, and often boastful rhyming pattern glibly intoned by a vocalist or vocalists”(dictionary”. Although the music genre did not get nationwide attention until the early 1980s, it soon became a major part of the American mainstream musical landscape. I plan on discussing the origins of rap music and the transition it has taken to get to where it is today.
To truly understand the origins of rap music, one must go back thousands of years ago in Africa to the “griots.” Griots were villagers who would tell stories to the beat of their homemade instruments. This form of talking over a beat or an instrument is the most basic root of rap music today. Also, slaves would participate in a form of singing called, “call to answer” in which one person would call out a section of a song and another person would finish it. Many DJs use this technique while performing to get extra crowd participation (Mize, colemizestudios).
The first ripple of rap music began in the Bronx, New York in 1973(wood, novaonline). During this time, DJ kool, who is typically referred to as “the first DJ” or “the founding father of hip hop,” started spinning brief sections of records at local parties (Mize, colemizestuidos).
