This is because when she was in her early twenties, her sister was forced to marry into the aristocrat family. They then killed them off, leaving her sister to be pregnant with Charles Evrémonde [Charles Darnay]. When Darnay entered England, he got a ways in until some guards found him and brought Darnay to Defarge.“ ‘Citizen Defarge,’ said he to Darnay’s conductor, as he took a slip of paper to write on. … ‘You are consigned, Evrémonde, to the prison of La Force’ ” (250). Darnay has now been sent to prison and is awaiting for his sentence. He was brought here because they had the ability to claim him as a Frenchman emigrating into England. After this, he was set free due to the possibility of a look alike. He rejoins his family and that same night he was set free, he was taken back to prison for the act of involvement in Madame Defarge’s family murder. This was because of a letter found by the Defarges that Dr. Manette [Darnay's father-in-law] had written previous to being set free from prison. “ ‘From the time of our alighting at the outer gate’ … “ ‘At last she is dead?’ said the elder when I went in ” (315-323). Throughout this time he spent with this family, he wrote that the sister of Madame Defarge was pregnant with Darnay. Darnay was set up for failure when he was born in the Marquis family. But he chose to take matters into his own hands and left the country to become a worker and have an improved, less noble family. Sydney Carton always questioned why he was the way he was, until he met Lucie and decided to change some of that. Carton decided to give his life to Lucie and her family in a way that would make him feel like he had a considerably good life. Madame Defarge was woman who went through a large tragedy when she was younger. Rather than deciding to forgive and forget, she strong-mindedly chose to get revenge for what Darnay’s relatives did to her family. But why is it that most chose to get the revenge and stay on their set fate rather than find a way to change their fate and make something better of themselves?
