“The Masque of the Red Death” Criticism
Ever wondered why certain objects in a story keeps reappearing? Most likely the author is trying to explain that maybe the object symbolizes something. As for an example, the clock in the short story “The Masque of the Red Death” , symbolized time and fate. In the story, the prince, Prince Prospero, tries to hide from a disease that have terrorized his village. So, he gathers his closest friends and family and hides them in his castle from the Red Death, as they called it. But, little did they know, that one can run from a destined fate, which Edgar Allan Poe describes in the story. In “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, he uses the theme of the clock, time, and fate, to explain that one can not go against his or her own destiny. In a unique way, Edgar Allan Poe showed us that running from destiny makes things worse. Ellis 2
In The “Masque of the Red Death”, Poe used the theme of the clock to reveal that time is running out. The narrator is describing the item, he says,
“It was in the apartment, also, that there stood against the western wall, gigantic clock of ebony”(pg 449). In the story, Poe is probably presenting a potentially important symbol for the story. The narrator is describing the clock in Prospero’s home, he says, “ And, anon, there strikes the ebony clock which stands in the hall of velvet”(pg 450). The clock in the hall of the
Prince’s house symbolizes that time is running out.…
