The main goal of Applied Behavior Analysis programs is to decrease maladaptive behaviors and increase deficit behaviors. Learning will happen when the right teaching environment is recognized and regularly maintained. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst is responsible with the improvement of socially significant behaviors, which include reading, academics, social skills, communication, and adaptive living skills. Adaptive living skills include gross and fine motor skills, eating and food preparation, toileting, dressing, personal self-care, domestic skills, time and punctuality, money and value, home and community orientation, and work skills (autismawareness.com). The main elements of Applied Behavior Analysis simplify learning. This involves all tasks, from simple ones such as to wave or clap their hands, to complex skills such as having a conversation, that are broken down into a chain of small steps that are easier to learn. Each step is taught by giving the individual the opportunity to practice repeatedly until they master the skills and can use it independently in their everyday life. Additionally, A Board Certified Behavior Analysis identifies activities that the individual really likes and uses these activities to motivate them during the teaching interactions with the use of positive reinforcement.
