“Listening to them, I realized how much of who I was, what I was, had been defined by Baba and the marks he had left on people’s lives.” (174) Amir’s whole life had been defined by Baba’s mark on the world. Baba was well-known throughout the whole community for having accomplished many seemingly impossible tasks such as designing an orphanage all by himself to running many successful businesses. Amir was proud to be Baba’s son because he knew that Baba could accomplish anything he set his mind to “...my father molded the world around him to his liking.” (15) Baba decided that Afghanistan was unsafe and held little opportunity for Amir so he took him to America. The trip to America was treacherous. While traveling they were forced to sit in a gas tank for part of their journey. One night as Rahim and Baba were in the lounge Amir came up to them and asked Baba to read his story, but Baba did not respond. Rahim offered to read his story despite being judged by Baba for his actions. “As always, it was Rahim Khan who rescued me.” (31) Amir was hurt by that experience, but was glad to have Rahim on his side. Later in the year on the night of Amir’s birthday Rahim came up to Amir and gave him a journal and as they talked Rahim said, “And I’ll tell you this, Amir jan: In the end, the world always wins. That’s just the way of things.” (99) Rahim was great at comforting Amir and giving him just what he needed to get back up on his feet, so when
