The Jungle In the year of 1905–1906 America was still trying to “reconstruct” and put everything in line to be a good country. You had American citizens dying including children; you had people in debt working extreme hours and in conditions to pay off. People were living in America supposedly called the “home of the free” to really the home of the worst. In the book “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair it describes exactly what was going on in those time periods. The book is about a family who struggles with the rigors of life in America during 1905-1906. In The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is highlights the themes of an American dream /immigrant life, socialism, and misery. In that country, rich or poor, a man was free, it was said; he did not have to go into the army... (Sinclair 7). Sadly the whole book convinces that statement to be untrue. The author reveals that the “American dream” was not accomplished by the immigrants who moved to Packingtown. Ona and the family goes to work which they end up dying (including children) because of the working conditions and the family signs a lease on a home, which they eventually lose. It says that “It belonged to them, they had only to pay the money and it would be all right. Then Jurgis covered his face with his hands, for there were tears in his eyes, and he felt like a fool.
