It makes them make choices that will have serious consequences. Those consequences would not only affect the person that did it but it may also affect their whole family. When Jurgis fought Ona’s boss because he was taking advantage of her he was blacklisted. When Jurgis tried to get a job the foremen had promised him a job, when he went back he was told, “I’m sorry, but I made a mistake. I can’t use you”, Jurgis did not understand what had happened. He went to a saloon and some men explained to him that “he was blacklisted!” and the cause of that was the fight he had with Ona’s boss. No one was fair with the working class people; they were simply racist towards them because of where they came from and how they were. An example of sexism is when Ona slept with her boss because if she refused to sleep with him, “he would ruin [them]”. He was taking advantage of her and “he threatened [her]”, Ona did not have a choice because if she refused to do what her boss said everyone from her family would lose all they had. Ona had to keep quiet about all of that and she had to suffer all by herself. There was nothing she could do because he was a powerful man that could end her life in no time. Marija Berczynskas, Ona’s cousin, became a prostitute. She could not find any other kind of job but this one. Being a prostitute would give her enough money to pay and buy what she needed. Marija became addicted to morphine; it helped her with headaches and also to have energy. Some women, like Marija, needed a job and being a prostitute is all they could really get. Women suffered a lot, they had to do things they did not really want to but had to if they wanted to survive. They suffered sexism frequently and there was nothing they could do about it. Opting for prostitution was an easy way to get money but it was really painful for them because they needed to sleep with any kind of men, and that would tear their soul apart little by little every day.
