The number one factor associated with emergent bilingual’s abilities to develop their language and literacy abilities is the common disbelief that if you live in America you should speak English. Although English is the number one language in America, not all Americans are fluent in English. Having this stereotype on their shoulders may negatively impact student’s affective filters. Since this school is a majority of Spanish students, I feel that having more focus on the different cultural aspects of the student’s lives will engage the students and the student’s families much more.
3. For assessment instruction, I recommend that the tests should be much less direct from the study guides and textbooks. I feel as though the only indicator of student’s processing the knowledge, is if they are able to make inferences and connections with their learning
4. Since Visitation is a Catholic School and church is separate from state, they do not have to follow all of the same laws as public schools. When it comes to teacher qualifications, not all of the teachers at Visitation have passed all of their state exams. I recommend that Visitation considers this when hiring faculty and that passing state exams should be a requirement for the hiring process.
5. I also recommend that the teachers use technology more in their curriculum design. Each hallway has a cart of IPads that the teachers can use and most of the classrooms have Smart Boards. However, between the two third grade classrooms, I have barely seen either of these sources of technology used.
