How To Read A Book

To be honest, when I was first given this assignment, I was worried. Although I enjoy books and love to hear people tell stories, I am not much of a reader. I use excuses such as, “I’m too busy.” or “I don’t have time.” to justify the reasons I don’t read more books. Part of the reason I took AP literature was so I could understand how to read into the deeper meaning of books and expose myself to different novel content. I realized though, despite the fact I am not a big reader, books have played a large roll in my childhood and teenage life. Some of my earliest and fondest memories involve books and stories.

This is the one night each year I will NEVER tell my mom I am too old for her to read me a story; that night is Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is my absolute favorite night of the year! Not only do we attend Christmas Eve mass, we also celebrate with a longstanding family tradition of paella (spanish seafood and rice dish) for dinner and my mother reads “The Night Before Christmas”. My sister and I get into our PJ’s, leave the cookies for “Santa”, sprinkle the reindeer food on the lawn and jump into my bed to get snuggled under the cozy blankets. Even though we now know Santa is a nonexistent mythical character, I believe the butterflies in our tummies as she clicks on the flashlight and opens the book may never go away. There is no denying the joy Christmas brings to my house. Even though I know she has the words memorized, my mom turns each page so we can look at the intricately painted pictures of Santa and his reindeer. She turns the last page and proclaims my favorite sentence, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Goodnight!”. Yes, it may sound corny but there is just something so magical about those words as they fly from the pages and into the night. That book has been part of my many Christmas Eve traditions, and I couldn’t imagine the night without it!!
My hope for this year is that I can develop a deeper appreciation for literature.
