The Importance of Bilingual Education in America

First off, it’s important to understand the difference between learning and education. Learning is the ability of an individual’s brain to acquire and retain information for a lifetime, whereas education is an aide to further strengthen a student’s learning capacity with the use of resources: teachers, libraries, classroom environment, etc. All students are essentially equal when they enter the educational environment, however students who don’t speak English have an unfair disadvantage in the american educational system. The techniques a bilingual teacher frames their lessons and assignments around is crucial to the ultimate comprehension the student needs to gain in order to be productive and successful in school. Also, bilingual students have a necessary needs for assessment tools that are beneficial to their learning needs (Ballantyne), and English speaking students don’t necessarily require a desperate need for these same tools. These different learning techniques and tools given by the instructor are what separates non-bilingual students with bilingual students. It is the job of the bilingual teacher to provide each student with a sufficient education, and to accommodate the students needs to understand the material in both English and the common language each of the students in the class are more comfortable with. It is understandable as to why students whose first language is not English to feel confused in a classroom where the instruction is not being taught to them in their native language. The importance of bilingual education in America is necessary because of the high demand for such a unique educational style of teaching, and it should be available to any student who fits certain molds and requirements.
