The university is only responsible for so much. Some things must be done at the individual level. You are in control of your career. Now I understand some things can be political let’s be honest, but for the most part you control your destiny. You can run and hide and not care all you want, but whatever it is that the good Lord has called for you to do, you will find your way their eventually. The University needs not to continue to segregate minorities from a majority. Instead, the moment we stop ostracizing ourselves and strive to be seen as “a student” not a “black student” only then will a lot of the issues facing our country and university come to a cease. As an African American student myself, I have been blessed to experience the same amount of treatment as a white student simply because I choose to seek guidance and help when needed. I don’t see myself any different than a white student, and neither should other peoples of color. The longer we allow the ignorance of racism to control our circumstances the further and further away we push ourselves from social justice. When we respond to the evils of hate crimes with an equal amount of resistance we provide the culprit with exactly what they are seeking; attention. America expects a bunch of black people being loud mouthed protesting in the streets, what they don’t expect is an educated black person able to confidently and accurately defend themselves by use of sound logic and factual information. Knowledge is power, complaining won’t change the circumstance or situation. We have to stand together as an African American community and exploit the freedoms given to all citizens. Only then can we properly and logically look the eyes of racism in the face and blindly elevate ourselves above the ignorance and solidarity of prejudice not only against a majority Caucasian population but also among ourselves as African Americans.
