The progressive era had many events and problems. This would include racism, women rights, and human rights in general. There were many protests and a very dangerous radical group called the Klu Klux Klan. People in the 1920’s were very prejudiced. Others saw this and peacefully protested and that is what caused change.
Women in the progressive era had little to no rights. They were not allowed to vote. Married women had had no property rights. They could not go to college. If any woman were to get a divorce the man would have full custody of the child. According to the website Lives of our Women only 18.2% of women had a job with low pay in 1900. African Americans were not allowed to vote until late 1800’s. “The 15th Amendment, adopted in 1870, guaranteed that a citizen’s right to vote would not be denied —on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (Black History). White southern men who used to own slaves felt their power slipping away from them. These farmers made many groups but, the largest was the K.K.K.
The K.K.K. was founded in 1866. Their main goal was restoration of white supremacy throughout the south. At this time African Americans were getting their rights. They were even getting political jobs. The Klu Klux Klan saw this and acted quick. “At least 10 percent of the black legislators elected during the 1867-1868 constitutional conventions became victims of violence during Reconstruction, including seven who were killed”(Klu Klux Klan). African Americans have been abused and terrorized for years, and people are still racist to this day.
In today’s day and age we have 30 basic human rights according to Universal Declaration of Human Rights that protect all of us. That doesn’t mean we are equal or fair. Look at all the presidents, only 2 out of 46 were a different race. Illegal immigrants make up 4% of America's population.”But undocumented immigrants are not allowed to vote in U.S. elections. Only U.S. citizens can vote. To apply for citizenship, an individual must be a legal resident for at least three to five years and meet other requirements, according to the Department of Homeland Security”(Washington Post). When these immigrants of kids here in the U.S. their kids are a born citizen so when they are 18 they could legally vote.
