Title What kind of person could go through so many bad things in his life, but in the end, can come out on top and be a better person because of it? That person is the character Caelum Quirk, from the book The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. The trials you face in life can make you better or worse. In Caelum’s case, it made him better. The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb is one of the best books I have ever read. It follows Caelum Quirk and his struggles through many trials he faces with his wife, his family, his students, and most importantly, himself. Caelum Quirk is understanding, loving, and sympathetic. Caelum Quirk did not start out as very understanding, but over time he grew to become more understanding with each day that passed. “When he came flying at me, I took a shot at his head that, thank God, didn’t connect.” (Lamb 11,12). This quote is from when Caelum was at Paul’s house, and attacked him because Paul was having an affair with Caelum’s wife. Caelum wanted to kill him in the moment. Caelum really wants to hurt Paul. He did not forgive Maureen for having an affair at first. But when Caelum says “Thank God”, it tells us that he really didn’t want to kill Paul. This quote shows how Caelum was not very understanding at the beginning of the book. “‘But we’re late,’ I reminded her, and she reminded me that she couldn’t handle enclosed spaces. ‘Come on then!’ I said, and opened the door to the stairwell.
