Whether answering a call from God or by invitation, Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen came to America to minister to the Dutch population. Furthermore, through his studies at the University of Lingen and his pastoral associates during his first pastorate in East Friesland, Frelinghuysen ultimately ascribed to the theological leanings of a confessional pietist, among which was a view of conversion. Although never officially systematized, confessional pietists in the German Lutheran, Dutch Calvinist, and Puritan communions were in general agreement on the nature of Christian conversion. So, after arriving in America, Frelinghuysen pastored the congregation in Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey and traveled throughout the colonies spreading his influence. Consequently, through Frelinghuysen, the controversial Dutch Reformed pietist the Great Awakening spread throughout the middle colonies in America instituting doctrinal changes.
Following this further, according to Christine Leigh Heyrman, The First Great Awakening: Divining America, a New Age of faith rose to counter the currents of the Age of Enlightenment. Ultimately reaffirming the view that being truly religious meant trusting the heart rather than the head, prizing feeling more than thinking, and relying on biblical revelation rather than human reason. .
