In the end, selfish people always end up alone. That is exactly what happened to the grandmother in “ A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. Bailey, the grandmother’s son, was taking his family to Florida. There was only one problem; the grandmother did not want to go to Florida, she grandmother wanted to go to Tennessee. The grandmother did everything in her power to change the families mind, resulting in the death of her and her family. Throughout the story, the grandmother is manipulative and egocentric; yet, she considers herself to be a lady. The nagging begins with the latest newspaper story about The Misfit, the criminal who escaped from the Federal Pen. “‘Just you read it. I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with …show more content…
The family had escaped death, but not for long. None other than The Misfit showed up, holding a gun. The grandmother pointed it out instantly and the whole family knew that meant disaster. The moment the grandmother realized she may die her manipulation began once more. “‘You wouldn’t shoot a lady, would you?’” (11) the grandmother questioned, referring to her as a lady, higher up than the others. The grandmother continued, “I know you’re a good man.” (11) Hoping to get away without a bullet in her she used her tactic of referring to the criminal as a “good man.” Perhaps the grandmother actually considered him to be a good man because she was just as bad as him and she still considered herself to be a lay. The Misfit then instructed one of the other boys with him to take Bailey and his sun into the woods. Once Bailey and his son got into the woods the sound of two gunshots echoed. The grandmother cried her son’s name, realizing that her fate was certain, not out of sorrow for her son’s death. Next, Bailey’s wife, holding the baby and the daughter went into the woods, also followed by gunshots. Even though her family was dead she still went to work trying to save

The use of foreshadow is very prominent in several of O’Connor’s stories. This story shows a strong use of foreshadowing within character dialogue as well as the title. The book starts with the grandmother reading a newspaper. “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people... I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it.”…

The next morning the milk man ran his rounds at 6:30 and the mail man ran his rounds at 7:25, Elwells doors were unlocked for both of their stops but when his housekeeper Marie Larsen arrived at 8:35 they were locked. She went inside and did her normal routine of picking up the milk and mail and taking it to the kitchen and then making her rounds about the house. During her rounds Larsen realized she was not alone; normally Elwell does not wake up until after she has finished cleaning but this morning he was sitting in his armchair wearing his red silk pajamas. It was not until Larsen got closer that she noticed he was bleeding from a bullet wound in his forehead. Larsen ran down to the drugstore and found patrolman Harry Singer, she said that Elwell needed an ambulance and that she believed burglars had shot him because they have had problems with burglars before.…

In Flannery O’Connor’s, A Good Man is Hard to Find, the grandmother continuously attempts to persuade the serial killer dubbed as the Misfit, to spare her life. She rambles on about how the Misfit is a good man and he would not shoot a lady, but to no avail. Finally, the grandmother decides to offer the Misfit money in exchange for her life, this when the Misfit utters such meaningful words. O’Connor’s use of diction in this single line maintains the Misfits facade. Although, the Misfit appears uneducated, he speaks with great value and intelligence.…

In the short story “ A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor the grandma isn’t just a regular sweet old lady. Through out the story she proves herself to be a lousy and conniving mother and grandmother. Not only does she deceive her family, but also herself. A close look at her words and actions show the grandmother to be manipulative, over critical, and over compensating in her own judgments of herself.…

It was a rainy Monday morning when Angela had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. But she brushed it off kissed her husband George goodbye and went ahead and went into work. She was a surgical resident at a nearby hospital and had just started on her daily rounds when the call came in. He was a gunshot victim, badly wounded and barely hanging on for dear life. He had gotten in an altercation with a 16-year-old boy about a parking spot when the young man pulled out a hand gun and didn’t hesitate at all when it came to pulling the trigger.…

In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother is a lady who believes that she is morally superior to others. The grandmother believes that she is a good Christian lady and that there are not that many good people around anymore. She is closed minded, selfish, and not very self-observant. This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. The grandmother acts like a “good” person on the road by “...would not let the children throw the box and the peanut butter napkins out the window” (O’Connor 140).…

This article has almost everything I need to support the idea of the grandmother’s selfishness and personality, from the way she pleaded for her life to the reasons why she used those exact pleads. The article even points out that she was like this from the beginning when she wanted to go to Tennessee and tried to convince Bailey to go. As for the Misfit, this article has some support for his character. One example for the Misfit would be his lack of any faith or emotion in his…

From the beginning the O’Conner uses characterization to present good and evil with the Grandmother with the way she uses her religion. When the family meets Red Sammy Butts the grandmother is sitting having a conversation about the old times compared to the new times and the grandmother says "It isn 't a soul in this green world of God 's that you can trust" (409). This is hypocritical of her faith. Leading us to believe that she doesn’t trust you unless you show her different. Then later on in the story she begs for her life, never once begging for her grandchildren or even her own son’s life to be saved.…
