Since childhood obesity and sugar-sweetened beverages have such a strong correlation, a policy should be developed and implemented to combat this nationwide issue. The federal policy will be a federal tax on certain sugar-sweetened beverages all across the United States. For a federal policy to be implemented it needs to be passed by both houses and needs to be signed off by the president. The reason for a federal policy instead of state or city policy will allow for a universal system and would make it simpler for those who are taxed. Currently no current policy exists even with the rise in childhood obesity and need for some sort of nationwide change. The only policies do exist are city policies, which have proven to beneficial in certain areas, but negative in others. A federal policy would take priority over the already city policies already in place or ones that are in the final state of completion. The federal policy that is recommended is a nationwide tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The federal policy will model the one used by the city of Berkeley in California. The federal policy will implement a one cent-per-ounce tax on certain sugar-sweetened beverages, which is the same value that is used in Berkeley. Tax will not be on the consumers or even the beverage manufacturer but be implemented on the beverage distributor. The beverage distributor will be taxed on the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages they distributed for sale to retailers in given period of time.…
