Death Is A Bad Thing To Die Analysis

Death is something you cannot avoid, ignore, or get rid of. Everything has to come to an end, even a person’s life. Death is something that everyone fears and it is avoided in todays society. Death is something that everyone will face sooner or later. I imagine that death is always waiting behind the door and you have the choice to open it. So the question is, should I be afraid of death? This is an important question to me because, what is going to happen to me once I die? Do I go to heaven or hell right after or are they not real? Thomas Nagel says “If death is the unequivocal and permanent end of our existence, the question arises whether it is a bad thing to die.” The reason why its such a difficult question to answer is because its something you do not want to think about. Nor does one really know what happens to you once you pass away. Some people think death is dreadful and other people have no objections towards death. People just hope that it is not an early or a painful death. I personally am not afraid of death because it is inevitable, I am just afraid that I have not lived my life to its fullest potential and …show more content…
Its because of the opportunities that you could be missing out on if your life was to get cut short. No one wants to die at and early age or have a painful death. It was my grandfathers time to leave. He lived a good 80 plus years and lived it to his fullest potential until he started to suffer. I don’t think people get sad by death, I think it’s the sudden shock that gets people afraid sad, and upset because its something that people do not expect. One second someone might be with their loved one and then the next that loved one can die. All the memories that you had with that one person will start rolling into your head and all you can think is, “What could have you done to make him live for one more day?” I am not saying that death can be scary but there is more to death than just being afraid of

In the philosophical world the east side of the world and the west side of the world focus on different ideas and concepts. One of the more interesting concepts that east and west differentiate on is how they value death and dying. Western culture focuses on getting over the individual 's death and preparing for it. Eastern culture focuses on getting over your friends and family’s death. My first thought when I was taught this was, “Wow we’re selfish.”. I then read Dr. Olberding’s Other People Die, which taught me that It might just be more about Confucius and Zhuangzi viewed their friends and family. As I read these individuals works and mulled over their thoughts, I began to form my own opinion on the topic. I eventually came to the conclusion…

I like to think of life as a journey that one goes on and fills everyday with everlasting memories with their loved ones. A journey that allows one to not only make mistakes but also gives the opportunity to learn from those mistakes. The struggles, failures and successes of life is what makes the journey so memorable and something that many people fear the end of. Nevertheless, life is a journey that must be cherished as it is short and we are not guaranteed a certain amount of time. So therefore, death is something that abruptly ends all the potential mistakes that one could have made, lessons that could have been learnt and potentials memories that could have been made. In my perspective, death not only harms the one who is dying by taking away their life but also the loved ones of the deceased individual by taking away someone they…

Grant Wiggins is an educated man, but he is flawed. In the beginning of A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest J. Gaines, Grant is proud yet cowardly. He only thinks of himself, his burdens, and his needs. However, after getting to know Jefferson, Grant starts to see the world differently, eventually transforming into a considerate man. Transformation is a common topic in the book, and Grant, like many of the other characters, is transformed into a better person by his experience of trying to help Jefferson.…

Life is it a blessing or is it a curse? This has always been an endless question in my opinion that’s often frequently asked. “A Life-or-Death Situation” corresponds with “Choosing to Die After a Struggle with Life”, both articles are written by Robin Marantz Henig. They are focusing on a married couple and a husband who is a quadriplegic. Peggy Battin and husband Brooke Hopkins has had a turmoil of pitfalls. Life is it a blessing or is it a curse, the need to help your significant other outweighs persona thought.…

In discussions of death, a controversial issue has been whether death is bad for the person that dies. According to Epicurus and Rosenbaum, humans should not fear death because they are unaware of their death and therefore death cannot be bad for them. According to Nagel, however, says death is bad for the person who dies because it deprives that person of all the good that life can bring them. Therefore, they disagree on whether death is implicitly bad for the person that dies.…

Death is a small, seemingly innocuous five-letter word. It is a topic that many do not like to discuss until it is absolutely necessary, while others may sit and ponder it in order to make sense of their life and purpose. Many ask themselves things such as “what will happen to me after I die?” One may think that humans are scared of dying or even say that they personally are scared of death. The uncertainty of an afterlife, or the concern over what will happen to those one leaves behind are valid concerns. According to writer David Sobel (1974) in an article titled Death and Dying, he makes the clarification that death in itself is not what people really fear. Instead, it is the separation from those they love and being without those who die…

“ Boundaries need to be communicated first verbally and then with actions.” This quote by Dr. Henry Cloud signifies the proper way boundaries should be handled and accepted. Coincidently, Ernest J. Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying, demonstrates specific boundaries and obligations that yield upon the characters involved. It is set in a small Cajun community in the 1940s, a time where there is societal division between blacks and whites, and revolves around the main characters of Grant and Jefferson amongst other minimal characters. Throughout the book, Gaines intentionally incorporates both societal and religious boundaries that affect the characters in individual ways. Although these characters have obligations…

I relate most to Grant in ‘A Lesson Before Dying’ because he’s the one that’s always there for everyone he says it like it is and doesn’t care. When Jefferson was having a hard time after he got sentenced to death, if I was in Jefferson’s lawyers’ shoes I would try everything in my power but he didn’t have much because he was a black male when racism was normal, I am very grateful that now color does not determine if you’re guilty or not. Jefferson’s lawyer was trying to win over the judge and jury. He made Jefferson seem like he couldn’t be capable of comparing him to a hog and saying he is just a boy, “gentlemen of the jury look at this – this – this boy… when we, civilized men consider the male spices has reached manhood, but would you…

“Death is the cause or occasion of loss of life” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The majority of people fears death. Some are afraid of what is there after death; some are afraid of the act of dying itself. Even the most devout believer can fear death because it is more of a universal fear – one that is hardwired to our minds. Some say that this fear follows from the fear of life but that is not the only cause why most of us fear death so much as to affect our daily lives. The fear of death is caused by subjective reasons. There are people who are afraid to die because there are people or things they do not want to leave behind, or they are scared to what will happen after they leave them. There are also those who fear death because they have…

Death and dying is something that is going to impact us all during some point in our lives. Just as the way we will all dies varies, so does the grieving and mourning process that our friends and family experience afterward. After researching several topics about death and dying what I found to be the most interesting for me was assisted suicide. I was surprised to see how many people were willing to take their own lives, as well as how many people that were will to assist these people in doing so.…

The first point made as to why death is not a bad thing was that when you die, you don’t experience pain, so there is no point to fear it. As Lucretius says, “Death, then, is nothing to us and does not affect us in the least”(Book 3, 830). Their…

Have you ever seen injustices but it didn't matter because they didn't see the other person as equal? In the book A Lesson Before Dying by ERNEST J. GAINES shows how a black man was accused of a crime he did not commit! He was at the wrong place, at the wrong time. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Tom Robinson was accused of raping a young white woman. In both books both men were accused of crimes they did not commit.…

What is death? The number of times this question has been Google searched worldwide has reached its highest point since 2004 in recent months (“Interest”). While this seems grim, it is a question about which many people wonder throughout their lives. It may be that it is impossible to know the answer to this question for sure, but there are people who develop their own ideas and share them. One such person was Emily Dickinson. Dickinson wrote extensively on the subjects of death and immortality, to a point that some have described as obsession. Through the poems “The Heart Asks Pleasure First,” “No Rack Can Torture Me,” and “Because I Could…

This discussion matters because some people are in distress over the topic of death. Many people live life scared of death and fear it mitally. Others that do not fear death can live their lives to the fullest and not scared of what the afterlife will be like. I believe that death should not be feared. I would like to think that I live my life to the fullest but I also live my life in a fairly safe and non riskful manner. Death is naturally viewed as a bad thing because you are leaving this world and do not get to experience the everyday experiences that you do. Also the nature of death can be thought as a bad thing because nobody truly knows what happens to us after we die. Since no one knows what forsure happens to us when we die that is the only reason that we can even have this debate and this debate will continue on until it is proven to us what happens to us after we die.…

But based on what I believe today, I find that death secretly excites me. It is no longer some unknown void that keeps me awake at night, half curious and half afraid – but something to look forward to at the end of a life well-lived. This does not mean that I want to end my own life, because I feel very blessed to be alive with the opportunity to learn and to help others. It also doesn’t mean that I won’t grieve when others die, or that I won’t be afraid as a patient facing imminent death. But when that time comes, my fear of death will be similar to the fear that I experience when the car of my roller coaster at Cedar Point slowly ascends the first hill, just before the plunge. The ride itself is enjoyable, but the anticipation that leads up to it can be nerve-wracking. The same is true of death. In my moments of insecurity at the end of my life, I will find comfort in the fact that love, peace, reunion, and explanations to life lessons await me on the other…
