He mentions a passage from the chapter titled “Speaking of Courage”, where it talks about courage as a matter of endurance. A person can be courageous during one moment and then it will be gone for another day. When he states that “Sometimes the bravest thing on earth was to sit through the night and feel the cold in your bones. Courage was not always a matter of yes or no” (O’Brien 100). He explains how someone can choose to remain silent about the pain that they had experienced in the past or come out of it pretending to be a strong individual. He describes Norman Bowker, who was just like any other Vietnam War veterans during that time period. He served his patriotic duty for himself and most especially for the country. He came back to the United States struggling to make an adjustment from a time where he was at war to a time of peace. For him, all of his effort, dedication, and even all of the awards that he received is pointless because he thinks that no one is willing to understand and listen to his stories from the war. He describes how Vietnam War is the most problematic war among others, from the disagreement over to the inconsistent and unstructured of attrition that soldiers were asked to fight even though they are not willing to. Americans were trying to fight against the communism. He also mentions that war began in 1954 led by Ho Chi Minh and his allies, then Cold War happened between the two global superpowers which are the United States and the Soviet Union. Around 3 million people which include almost 58,000 Americans were killed during that moment. I cannot imagine how it was like there. I always have this thought that life is a special gift that we have to take care of, but people or soldiers like in the war, they never thought that they would die at any time. As an ordinary individual thinking how their family can accept and recover because it is not that easy. It is not like a simple thing that if you don’t like it, you are going to dump or throw it away and forget about it anymore. For instance, he says that the key concept to pull out the American soldiers out of the Vietnam War to keep them safe is the secret plan Vietnamization, where the Americans will train the Vietnamese soldiers to take their places and they will go off and they will win the war.
