When we exercise, I bodies attempt to supply our bodies with the needed oxygen. Our bodies need this oxygen to move our muscles. Muscles get energy from the chemical energy. This energy is formed in a process called glycolysis that breaks down glucose into a substance called pyruvate. This process depends on the amount of oxygen present in the body. The two forms are aerobic and anaerobic respiration reactions. Under normal circumstances, aerobic respiration is used. This is when the muscles are at rest. It supplies the oxygen through tissues with red blood cells. Chemically speaking, it is the process of glucose and oxygen reacting to form carbon dioxide, water, and energy. It is important to note that carbon dioxide and water are waste products. …show more content…
This is when the muscles are hard at work, but insufficient oxygen is supplied to them. The heart and lungs are unable to keep up with the amount of oxygen the hard working muscles need. This is when glucose breaks down to form lactic acid, lactate, and energy. Lactic acid is the waste. In this case, there is a smaller amount of energy as product.
Lactic Acid can accumulate to very high levels in just a few minutes. As a side effect, the acidity in muscle cells increases and other metabolism substances decline. The production that breaks down glucose to energy does not work as well in this acidic environment. In extreme exercise, the lactic acid and other metabolites result in the burning feeling in muscles. Lactic acid is a chemical that is toxic chemical to the body. This painful feeling is the body’s way of telling us to rest and take a break. When lactic acid accumulates in muscle tissues, it can lead to soreness and loss of strength due to cell
