1. Introduction
Alzheimer’s disease can be characterized as a neurodegenerative disease where an individual suffers from progressive loss of memory and basic mental functions. Because researchers cannot pinpoint a specific factor that causes Alzheimer’s disease, many theories exist regarding its causation. One such theory, the dysfunction mitochondria within an individual’s brain cells, the organelle’s DNA mutation, and the implications these two variables have on the causation of Alzheimer’s disease is a leading theory among the scientific community and is therefore explored. A second and more controversial theory, aluminum exposure as a risk factor and eventual development of Alzheimer’s disease is also considered. the former theory is shown to be credible while the latter theory exhibits failure in experimental methodology and therefore not credible. Finally, the implications of dysfunctional and abnormal mitochondria are considered with respect to other neurodegenerative diseases. The implications suggest a credible relationship between defects in electron transport chains, located within the inner membrane of the mitochondria, and the development of other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Amyotrophic Sclerosis (ALS).
2.What is the main cause of Alzheimer’s Disease? At present, the scientific community cannot, with confidence, say definitively that Alzheimer’s disease is caused by one specific factor or another. However, mitochondria and its…
