The technology present are in some ways similar to the technology we have today. As stated in “ The telescreen works both ways. It's an announcement system as well as a surveillance network”( Orwell, page 3). This shows one way of “Big Brothers” spying methods. These telescreens are seen everywhere in the community of oceania. It's like a two way mirror, they see you but you can't see them. “Inside the flat a fruity voice was reading out a list of figures which had something to do with the production of pig-iron. The voice came from an oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror which formed part of the surface of the right-hand wall. Winston turned a switch and the voice sank somewhat, though the words were still distinguishable. The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.” ( Orwell, pg 3). This is significant because these devices cannot be shut off. The government watches you 24/7, day in and day out. Many people are scared to disobey the orders of “Big Brother” because of the way he tends to discipline. To this extent is why technology that is being used today is similar to the ones used in 1984. Our phones are a perfect example of a telescreen. Only our devices are able to be shut off. They have cameras and let you record anything live, why? Because the technology has advanced that much ever since the first phone came
