The world we live in today is very similar to the world of 1984, a similarity would include 1984 telescreens and today's cameras . For example, in the book 1984 by George Orwell's, Winston the main character of the book describes the telescreens and the job of telescreens,”There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment, how often, or on what system, the thought police plugged in …show more content…
In addition, in the book 1984 by George Orwells the children were used as spies,” That’s a first rate training they give them in the spies nowadays- better than in my day, even… ear trumpets for listening through keyholes… reckoned she could hear twice as much as with her ear to the hole” (Orwell's 62-62). The children use ear trumpets to train them and help them get the right idea of how to become a spy this gives the children an idea of their job. These ear trumpets help detect crimes by giving spies the ability of hearing what the citizens of Oceania are talking about. The citizens of Oceania should be concerned about this because these citizens can be turned in by these spies for anything that the spies find as a threat to Oceania or the party power. The world of 1984 is similar to today’s. Furthermore, in the U.S today our telephones track the citizens of the U.S using, “ Gps technology and smartphones apps these devices are also taking note of what we buy, where and when we buy it, how much money we have in the bank, whom we text and email, what web sites we visit, how and where we travel, what time we go to sleep and wake-up and more… much of that data is shared with companies that use it to offer us services they think we want” ( Maass, Rajagopalan). For example, in the book 1984 by George Orwell’s, Winston the main character of the book 1984 started a diary and, “ If detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty- five years in a forced labor camp” ( Orwell's 6). If the telescreen were to see Winston writing in his diary, Winston would be punished when all he is doing is expressing his thoughts using his freedom of speech. Winston's freedom of speech is being taken away by the telescreen and by the people monitoring the telescreens. Unfortunately, that argument fails to be considered because today’s society uses technology in a way that provides safety to the country and to the citizens of the country. For instance, in Britain today the CCTV cameras have done lots to keep it’s citizens safe and secure, “ CCTV images have been crucial to investigations as varied as a 12 year old robbing a store at gunpoint, the disappearance of a doctor, attacks by a serial rapist, a father and son hit by a train, laptops stolen from a school, and a soccer riot” (Carlile). Technology used today is for the good, CCTV cameras help cops and helps citizens stay safe by capturing and monitoring citizens and making sure that no crimes are being committed and if they are then they are stopped
