Doctor Omalu said, “Repetitive head trauma chokes the brain; and turns man into something else.” (Concussion, 2015) A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions. Most people associate concussion with contact sports such as football, soccer, hockey, and car accidents. Concussion can cause symptoms that interfere with school, social and family relationships, and participation in sports. Concussions are caused by a blow to the head. After a blow to the head, some people may not even realize that they have a concussion. Symptoms can appear immediately after injury or sometimes a few days later. People with concussions can experience amnesia, headaches, dizziness, confusion, tinnitus, slurred speech, irritability, psychological adjustment problems, and depression, among other things. Doctors perform a variety of examinations to test for concussions including a neurological examination, cognitive testing, imaging testing. The American Academy of Neurology has different grading scales for concussions. Grade one consists of transient confusion, no loss of consciousness; symptoms resolve in less than 15 minutes. Grade two is transient confusion, no loss of consciousness; confusion symptoms last more than 15 minutes. Finally, any loss of consciousness would be a grade three. Thirty percent of concussions lead to post concussive syndrome (PCS). Post concussive syndrome is more severe in children than adults. PCS can last for weeks or…
