Symbolism is an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. It originated in late 19th century in France and Belgium. Symbolism helps the reader understand the depths and secrets of the story or work of literature. In the three stories, Young Goodman Brown, A Good Man is Hard to Find, and A Rose for Emily, they all seem to portray many elements of symbolism. Symbolism is a very important feature in stories or pieces of literature and should always remain as long as the writers want the readers to be interested. In the story titled, Young Goodman Brown, the writer portrays pure mystery and suspense throughout the whole story. This story could also be called “The test of one man’s faith”, because even though the story is suspenseful, if the reader does not understand the symbols the author used, they would not fully understand the story’s secrets. The author shows that a strong faith can be the greatest asset of a man or woman, and once they finally compromise with that faith, it can lead to some big doubts in the world. Goodman Brown does show he has a strong faith before he enters the forest and sometimes during his journey to the darkness. Hawthorne uses the name of Goodman Brown 's wife, Faith, as a symbol of Goodman Brown 's faith throughout the story.
