In a world where life is a symbol for everything, with demons lurking in every corner, and people believing in a common lie; a man named Young Goodman Brown was permanently affected. In the story, “Young Goodman Brown,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Young Goodman Brown witnesses a mysterious ceremony, that will scorn his mind with the Devil’s presence. Near the conclusion of the story, many are stuck wondering if Goodman Brown experienced the reality of the Devil’s ceremony/journey to the forest or the tricks of an atrocious nightmare. The sensations that Goodman Brown experiences in his duration in the forest was a dream, because there was hints of what was to come, the setting afterward was undisturbed, there was evidence of a dream, and he was the only one affected. At the beginning of the story, Goodman Brown was talking with his wife about leaving for the night. His wife seemed to hint at what was to come later in the story, “...is troubled with such dreams...afraid of herself sometimes.” She seemed to show that not her, but Goodman Brown would experience troublesome dreams that night. She did not doubt her husband, although knew what was to come that night. In addition he became afraid of everyone around him including himself.
