After reading Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorn, the theme of the story has been found to be the loss of happiness and trust. After experiencing an extremely traumatizing event, Goodman Brown lost his trust in the people around him. He felt as if everyone was against him, even his wife. He no longer felt that the people around him were good Christian men and women but instead he thought that they were working with the devil. This symbolizes his loss in trust. His loss in happiness comes from his distrust in the people around him. He isn’t happy because of the way he views his once friends. Goodman Brown was turned into a man of distrust and unhappiness. This theme is absolutely valid in today’s marriages. Some men and women lose happiness
