Suicide is a major public health concern in today’s society. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 42,000 people and is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34 (Suicide Statistics)(NIMH » Suicide). The National Institute of Mental Health stated there are more than twice as many suicides in the United States as there are homicides (NIMH » Suicide). The table to the right shows the ten leading causes of death in the United States and the number of deaths attributed to each cause. The data shown are based on death certificate information compiled by the CDC. Even with research and data complicated over many decades, there is still no single cause for suicide (Risk Factors and Warning Signs). Suicide most often occurs when stressors exceed current coping abilities of someone suffering from a mental health condition (Risk Factors and Warning Signs). Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often undiagnosed or untreated (Risk Factors and Warning Signs). Often times the link between depression and suicide is strong (Vann). According to Paula Clayton, a medical director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in New York City, “ Ninety percent or more of people who kill themselves have a mental disorder before the time of their death” (Vann).
