Native American and European Traditions The English people who first immigrated to America slaughtered the Native Americans to near extinction because they thought the Indians were savages, but just how different, or similar, were the two groups. Both the Indians and Europeans had their own versions of a creation story, and they each had a sort of government that included a constitution. Between the two groups there are distinct comparisons and contrasts within the creation stories of the Indians, “The Sky Tree”, and “How the World was Made”, and the creation story of the bible in the book of “Genesis” as well as comparisons and contrasts between the two civic documents, The Iroquois Constitution, and The articles of the constitution of the…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

The events we remember throughout our lives get molded into an alternative version of the actual truth through retelling and embellishment. “Story truth” is the term Tim O’Brien uses to describe this variation of the truth. In his book, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien uses “story truth” to compel his readers to feel what he experienced during his service in war. With “story truth,” O’Brien provides us with an account of his personal experiences, as well as an idea of what others may have experienced, and explains how “story truth” can be dissected and analyzed as historical evidence. “Story truth” is the reshaped, exaggerated, and/or sometimes completely made-up version of the actual truth.…

An outrageously funny and humorous account of history's unknown stories, reading this book is like sitting is a roller coaster with your weirdest and funniest friends. Milton’s work contains depictions of valorous heroism, ghastly crimes, oddities of human society and other eye popping stories that will even amaze well-read historians. With an assortment of stories ranging from a pair of lovers who try to poison the woman’s husband, a soldier’s insistent fighting of World War II, a drunken baker on the Titanic surviving the cold North Atlantic water and many more this is easily the funniest collection of non-fiction I have read in a long time! The Stories We Tell

To me the significance of this title is the “stories” that we are taught in school is not the full truth of what happened. It has been proven time and time again that in America we tend to “whitewash” history, not telling the full truth and not telling all of the sides. For example, being taught that christopher columbus was the first person to discover America and that him and all the Native Americans got along and everyone lived happily ever after. “The Stories We Tell” are the stories that Americans (aka white people) tell to make our own history look less terrible.…

I’ve always had the impression that fairytales were innocent stories of finding true love and living happily ever after, like the way Disney depicted them to be. I never thought about where these stories came from and the different themes and symbols that were relevant of that time. Some of the things I’ve learned about fairytales have not only shocked me, but has also made me reevaluate everything I know about fairytales. Something I never knew about fairytales is that they weren’t always for children. I’ve always associated them with a younger audience so thinking that these stories were written for adults enjoyment is really crazy to believe.…
